Rise of the Tomb Raider Will Have Nested Physics Based Puzzles including Gameplay Screens.

Crystal Dynamics is revealing more details about the game. Recently new video interview featured on Game Informer Noah Hughes (Creative Director) explained how the game will improve on the titular tomb raiding over its 2013 predecessor. There won’t be a lot of logic based puzzles, as the studio is choosing to rely on physics instead.

“We really do celebrate puzzle design as a unique facet of our gameplay formula, and I think we take that as a challenge not just to create the fiction of a tomb space but to deliver on people’s sense to using their wits and resourcefulness to unlock these secrets. We still take an approach of leveraging real world systems like physics and things like that that we have very much a focus on, the ability to understand cause and effect in the world. You’re not going to find a ton of arbitrary logic puzzles, but you will find a lot more ancient themed puzzle spaces to leverage people’s sense of how the world works and physics and things like that.”

Fans of the old games might be happy to hear about the return of “nested puzzles”.

“Some of the things we’re doing to really push the sense of accomplishment is including what we call nested puzzles. This was actually common in classic Tomb Raider games where you might have multiple sides to a room or multiple things you need to do in order to solve the main puzzle, and that really allows you to actively tinker with these different elements rather than just standing there scratching your head and wondering what to do.

These tombs will take you longer to solve but it’s still a more active exploration of interesting physics systems, cause and effect and they all add up to that grand, final, getting through that door at the end of the room moment.”
