Since the launch of the PlayStation 4, Sony has been struggling to get their exclusive games on time. For example, Uncharted 4, which was supposed to launch this coming holiday, only to be delayed until next year. Don’t get me wrong, I prefer a game to be delayed, then released in a bad state. Sony’s President Shuhei Yoshida realises the difficulties in releasing product on time, lead him to recently open up on the development challenges that they are facing.

uncharted_trilogy, sonyOne of the latest examples of this is Uncharted 4, as it was initially scheduled to launch this coming holiday, and now it won’t debut until early next year. Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida knows about the difficulties the company has had in getting product out on time and he recently opened up about development challenges that exist currently.

“There’s always room for improvement, especially from our own titles. Sometimes we have to spend more time than we were originally hoping for, and what the team considers is achievable within a certain budget and time, turns out not to be the case.

Especially from the PS3 to PS4 era, because there are many more things that teams are finding that they can do, and lots of games now are trying to provide an open world setting. Teams want players to have more freedom to enjoy and find their own way of playing that particular game, and these tend to take time to develop. It’s always a challenge to make the game development more efficient, and be able to release titles in a timely fashion,” Yoshida told Stuff.

In short, games take a while, especially when the gaming era has changed, due to having more powerful hardware its now possible to make open world games which means more work and coming across new challenges.
